At the Phoenix Federation, we believe that Personal, Social and Health Education is a fundamental part of every child’s learning experience in order for them to become confident, happy and responsible citizens. We aim to promote personal growth, underpinned by our five core values (Apsirational, Brave, Compassionate, Determined, Enlightened), in a structured and developmentally appropriate way in order to give children the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to help inspire and equip them to lead a rich, fulfilling and purposeful life. We enable children to develop their sense of self-worth by celebrating what makes us unique while valuing the part we can each play in building a strong community.
We believe that learning about the emotional and social aspects of growing up will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to empower them to have safe and fulfilling relationships and to become independent, responsible members of society. Having introduced children to a wide range of concepts and having exposed them to a variety of experiences, we hope that they will have a strong understanding of the diverse world around them; be well equipped to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and to stay safe in our ever-changing society.
Throughout the federation, we have adopted the PSHE Association curriculum which aims to develop the “whole child” through a question based model. Teachers adapt this scheme in order to reflect the needs of their pupils. Half-termly units develop knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of:
– Relationships ( Including sex Education)
– Living in the wider world
– Health and well being
Its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world, with a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. The PSHE lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus which in turn encourages building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.
We are aware that our children are more exposed to digital technology than ever before. An important part of our PSHE curriculum gives children the opportunity to learn how to be responsible, safe and compassionate users of the internet and social media, and become increasingly critically aware of the content they are exposed to.
We have also a special focus in the upper years on visions for the future which includes a model on future aspirations and career fairs.
By the time children leave us they will:
• demonstrate kindness and respect towards themselves and others.
• have the courage and ability to try new things, challenge themselves and persevere.
• take responsibility for their actions.
• have a good understanding of how to stay safe and healthy
• How to develop good relationships.
• have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society.
• Be media literate with an understanding of how to use the internet safely.
• demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
• be on their journey preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
