This year in EYFS is very different as we are closer to our school community. We are located within the main building of the school, focusing on a variety of aspects to support learning through play. Here is what we plan to cover this half term based on our seven areas of learning in the Early Years.
We are learning to talk about our families, friends and ourselves. Understand simple commands and how to respond. To join in with action rhymes and songs. Develop listening skills, using children’s names to help them to focus and to follow instructions. To share and listen to a range of personal experiences, opinions and ideas; using the correct vocabulary and tenses.
The children will continue their Mindfulness and Cosmic Yoga sessions; being in the moment and positive thinking. They will also have regular brain breaks and wake and shake activities. We encourage independence to dress/undress and to select tools or natural learning resources, improving their pincer grip. Alongside providing opportunities to further build on their core and gross motor skills during PE and Outdoor learning sessions.
To learn about Lucas Vale Values and celebrate our differences, whilst fostering independence and self-care in our play. To seek comfort from a familiar adult when needed and respond to a few appropriate boundaries. Our children will be taught how to emphasise with others and express their own feelings such as sad, happy, scared, cross, worried using tactile resources, alongside the ‘Mood Monster’ expression cards, access to our zones of regulation and the Class Tranquil Trolley.
Diverse books and texts are at the heart of our curriculum. This term our theme is ‘Terrific Toys and Transport!’ whereby we will explore mark making, initial sounds and CVC words. Different modes of transport (on the land, sea and air: as well as sharing their own experiences). We will arrange for a local to visit to the library and the Maritime museum. In addition, weave strong links to oracy, through partner talk and group discussion. Our children will continue to learn the RWI Phonics scheme, alongside developing a love for reading.
We will learn the counting principles using the maths mastery approach (stable order, one to one correspondence, cardinality, subsisting, numeral meanings and conservation). Number patterns, including shape, space and measures using practical and real-life examples (using public transport, shopping and baking). Our children are provided with open- ended opportunities to explore maths indoors and outdoors.
We will investigate various textures and materials. Learn about different types of music and how music is created. To identify similarities and differences, various types of transport and the importance. Host a toy celebration day. In addition, to develop their understanding about the change of seasons and how to keep safe when attending our weekly Woodlands School lessons.
Inspired by the Reggio Emillio Approach, we are starting to incorporate aspects such as developing a love for the Arts through performing and role play, exhibition art and creative designs using recycled materials. Accessing natural resources and designing our learning environment to be the ‘third teacher’. We are excited to have a CPD day with Greg Bottrill (Author and Consultant) and the EYFS pupils to gain a deeper insight about the importance of learning through play and Play Projects!
